we would really love to see Guilin while we are there, but don't know how to organise the train tickets.

Train ride from Beijing to Guilin will take about 24 hours,and price is about 500 CNY,you can book sleeping seat and Luxury or soft bed cabins.
You can book train tickets in most tourist hotels. They may charge you a small service fee. If the hotel you stay does not provide such service, you may want to go to the train station booking center. All taxi drivers in the city would know where the train stations are in Beijing and Guilin.

Beijing West station, which is where the Guilin train leaves from, has (or used to have) a special ticket office for foreigners,The easiest way is to ask your hotel to get the tickets.you only need to pay 20 CNY for them to help you buy the ticket.
